HPN NEWS – Weekend Magazine – 12/15/17

by Home Page Staff - December 15, 2017

Welcome to Weekend Magazine. Our lead feature this weekend celebrates Jarrod Davis, son of Kirk and Joann Davis. Jarrod completed his Eagle Scout project with an unveiling of a veterans monument on December 7th, 2017. The American flag flew at half mass on Pearl Harbor Day as the Davis family laid a wreath at the stone monument commemorating our brave veterans.

His project spanned nearly an entire year as he and his mentor, Kelly Thompson, a Navy veteran, worked to raise funds, plan the site and collaborated with local, John Mitchell on construction and landscaping.

Commander Scott Ostrom of VFW post 572 was the largest donor on the project and proudly attended with his wife, Anice Ostrom. Jarrod was able to diligently serve the community under budget and donated the remaining funds to the Tioga County Veterans Affairs Office for the Outreach Program.

On today’s broadcast, Home Page correspondent Stacey Dondey had the opportunity to visit with Jerrod, his Dad and Mom and others at the Flag Pole Dedication. Please take a few short minutes to watch.
All of us here at HPN News would like to congratulate Jerrod on the completion of his project. You have put your time and effort into something positive and lasting that will impact generations to come.

Hats are back! That’s right HATS are making a comeback. The Wellsboro area recently celebrated Christmas on Main Street where many of the residents took advantage of Christmas shopping deals and fun with family and friends. HATS seemed to be one of the fashion trends apparent during this time of celebrating Christmas. We found a few or our local models wearing hats and embracing the look of the 40s. Blake Seidel of Christine A Moore Millinery in New York says it’s not just the women who are getting back into HATS.

Soldiers and Sailors Hospital caregivers are keeping those newborn babies warm, and you can help too. Community hospitals like Soldiers + Sailors Memorial Hospital thrive by the giving support of friends, neighbors, and staff. And, Friends of Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital are are encouraging everyone to join them in raising funds to purchase a Panda Warmer for the hospital nursery. Honorary Chairs Brad and Joanne Scovill encourage everyone to join Friends in giving babies the best start close to home. To help meet the $25,000 goal, Brad Scovill, President & CEO of Citizens & Northern Bank, has generously pledged that Citizens and Northern Bank will match 20% of every dollar the community donates up to $5,000. And it’s nice to know that all donations stay local. Help SSMH give babies an even warmer welcome by joining the Friends campaign today. For more information or to donate, contact the Susquehanna Health Foundation at 570-320-7460 or visit UPMCSusquehanna.org/donate.

There’s a local author who has teamed up with her illustrator daughter being featured on The Writers, Artist & Crafter’s Spotlight. Home Page Contributor and host of Agricultural Spotlight Melissa Bravo sat down with the twosome right here in our Home Page studios to find out more. Don’t miss this special feature.

Blue Topaz is the perfect gift for December Birthdays or a unique and beautiful Christmas gift. Are you struggling this year with that perfect Christmas or December birthday gift? Well, we would love to help you out with a dazzling idea. How about Blue Topaz? When it comes to blue topaz, there are many different words that come associated with it: Swiss, Baby Swiss, London, Sky. All of these trade words are used to describe the color of blue topaz. London blue topaz is the darkest, most saturated color, with a slight smokey or inky look to it. Swiss blue topaz is an intense blue that is often described as electric. Baby Swiss is a lighter variety of the Swiss, and Sky blue topaz is the lightest blue and is often confused with aquamarine. Blue Topaz just may be your perfect choice for a special and unique Christmas gift or that perfect December birthday gift. On this edition of Weekend Magazine Gemologists Bethany Hawn gives us the beautiful details.

If you would like more information on the stunning Blue Topaz, you can contact Bethany’s Jewelry and design in Mansfield at 570-662-7333. We are happy to say that Bethany’s is part of our Home Page Family of Advertisers.
