Hornets fall in D4 Championship Games

The Wellsboro basketball teams traveled to Milton High School for the District 4 Class AA championships on Saturday, February 27. The Lady Hornets appeared in their first District IV championship game since the 2003-04 season, while the boys made their third appearance in the past four years.

Girls – Mount Carmel 56, Wellsboro 42

The Lady Hornets were up early, but Mount Carmel’s outside shooting propelled them to an 11-7 lead late in the first, but buckets by senior Sarah Ingerick and freshman Julia Smith tied it up for Wellsboro at 11-11 at the end of the quarter.

The game got away from Wellsboro in the second quarter as they turned the ball over 20 total times in the first half, with many of those coming in the quarter. Mount Carmel broke the game open as they scored 22 points and went on a 14-0 run at one point to take a 33-18 lead at the half.

Wellsboro managed to cut into Mount Carmel’s lead in the third as senior Jada Jackson scored 8 points in the quarter to cut it to 41-29 heading into the fourth, where Mount Carmel held on for the win.

Jackson finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Ingerick ended the night with 12 points, sophomore Lizzie Poirier had 11, Smith and junior Janessa Davis finished with 2 points each, and junior Jessica Grab pitched in with a point.

Boys – Danville 52, Wellsboro 39

The Hornets were unable to handle Danville’s pressure all night, as they turned the ball over 20 times on the night. Two early turnovers led to an early 5-0 Danville lead, but Wellsboro fought back behind 4 points from junior Alden Weiner and 3 from sophomore Dalton Prough to tie the game up 9-9 as the first quarter ended.

The second quarter belong entirely to Danville, as their full-court pressure caused 10 Hornet turnovers. Danville broke the game open as they outscored Wellsboro 15-3 in the period, with the Hornets’ only points coming from junior Jacob Singer. Singer’s three cut it to 16-12 before Danville finished the quarter on a 8-0 run to lead 24-12 at halftime.

Wellsboro continued to score the rest of the way as they were outscored 19-10 in the third to trail 43-22, thei largest deficit they faced all year. The Hornets managed to outscore Danville 17-9 in the fourth, but it was too little too late.

Dalton Prough led the Hornets with 16 points, Weiner finished with 8, and sophomore Collin Pietropola had 6. Singer and sophomore Nic Ingerick each scored 3, sophomore Quinn Henry finished with 2, and senior Dawson Prough added 1 point.

Weiner and Dalton Prough each had 6 rebounds in the game, and Dalton Prough had 2 assists and a blocked shot.
