Hornet XC teams sweep Canton, Sullivan County

by Ed Weaver - September 27, 2017

Wellsboro’s Cross Country teams both picked up a pair of wins over Canton and Sullivan County on Tuesday, September 26.

The Lady Hornets beat Sullivan County 15-50 and edged Canton 27-28. Canton also won 15-50 against Sullivan County. The Wellsboro boys beat Canton 25-30 and Sullivan County 21-34. The Canton boys beat Sullivan County 23-32.

In the girls race, Canton’s Tamara Hess won in 24:03, senior Anna Bleggi was 2nd in 25:54, Canton’s Josie Kelly (26:14) was 3rd, sophomore Kylie Butler (27:55) was 4th, and Canton’s Emily Landis (28:09) was 5th. Rounding out the rest of the Wellsboro girls wer sophomore Cathryn Brought (28:15) in 6th, junior Rachel Chamberlain (28:15) in 7th, junior Kara Doane (28:20) in 8th, freshman Aislinn Hoose (30:22) in 12th, freshman Alexis Banik (30:56) in 14th, and sophomore Alex Chilson (35:46) in 15th.

In the boys race, junior Aidan Perry won in 19:03, Canton’s Mak Gleckner (19:46) was 2nd, senior Connor Brought (19:52) and junior Bergen Weiner (20:31) were 3rd and 4th, and Sullivan County’s Jake Doyle (20:55) rounded out the top 5. Senior Zack Busch (21:25) was 6th, sophomore Lucas Citrino (24:10) was 17th, senior Logan Morral (24:37) was 19th, freshman Aidan Fletcher (25:30) was 20th, junior Taylor Wheeler (25:30) was 21st, sophomore Tyren Wetzel (32:44) was 24th, and senior Noah Smith (39:54) was 25th.

“We just needed some wins. The past couple of meets we’ve went 1-3, a little less than favorable,” said head coach Ron Brought. “The kids have worked hard, they’ve raced hard, there’s just a tremendous amount of talent in the NTL this year. We came out with the mindset of running for place, not times. We still turned in some pretty solid timesfor the high heat and humidity.”

In the Middle School race, all three teams did not have enough runners to generate a team score. Aidan Coffee was the only Wellsboro boy runner and came home in 7th (13:21) while Madeline Gage led the young Lady Hornets with a 5th place finish in 12:13.

The win improves the girls’ record to 4-2 (4-2 NTL) and the boys get back to .500 at 3-3 (3-3 NTL). The teams will be back in action on Saturday, September 30 at the NEPA Invite in Bloomsburg.

“I’m very optimistic going forward. We have Sayre and Towanda next week and we’ve had good luck against them in the past few years, then we face CV and North Penn-Mansfield in the final NTL meet of the season. Anytime we run against a rival it’s always exciting and we want to come out on top. Again, I’m optimistic but we still have work to do.”
