Global Maker Day
On today’s broadcast, we focus on The Southern Tioga School District’s Global Maker Day. The week-long project was an opportunity for students to learn to build and create in supplement of classroom learning. Home Page had a chance to talk with Mrs. Angel Sember who is the (Library Media Specialist at North Penn-Mansfield High School) about the event.
Angel Sember explained how Global Maker Day is a global effort to create locally and then share globally. Students work together as a group to solve problems and navigate challenges while unplugged. That means no technology. Later, solutions and problem-solving successes are posted on social media to let the world know what the students have accomplished. Different grade levels faced different challenges. This year’s project is the first year that the Southern Tioga School District’s Global Maker Day has gone district-wide.
Home Page also talked with two high school students who helped the kids with their activities for this unique educational event. Madison Milheim said that she likes how Global Maker Day involves kids learning new things while unplugged from technology. Gage Martin loves helping children work on team building skills. He also appreciates the fact that these young students are learning and having fun at the same time.
It’s good to learn something from a book or lecture, but it’s an entirely different level of learning when the “application component” is included. The Southern Tioga School District excels in the hands-on learning experience through projects like Global Maker Day. Students have the opportunity to think, create and collaborate with other students as an essential part in problem-solving. Special thanks to Angel Sember, Sarah Murray, Jennifer Nawri (Media Specialist/Librarian at WLM) and Sarah Brion (Media Specialist/Librarian at NP-LHS) for all their hard work in making this project such a success and working with The Home Page Network to help tell this story. We hope you will take a few moments to watch today’s broadcast. Enjoy!
