Earth Day at Mill Cove 2017

by Amiee Jones - April 24, 2017

Mill Cove hosted the annual Earth Day event on Saturday (22nd). From 10am to 3pm, those in attendance could peruse vendors and displays spread out along the scenic Mill Cove creek. A variety of handmade goods were available, ranging from Native American knives, to Alpaca wool products, to jewelry, and much more. Also, an assortment of tantalizing food vendors were scattered down the strip. A few live animal displays, including some stunning birds of prey, were present to enjoy.

Many informational displays were provided, which raised awareness about various environmental aspects. A trailer devoted to the subject of energy sources displayed different methods of generating power, and how they function. Another trailer showcased the different types of wood available in our Tioga County forests, as well as some gorgeously crafted items made from different combinations of our native timber. Along the tour, visitors could learn some of the threats to our trees, and how to take better care of our woods.

Plenty of entertainment and activity livened up the event. Children were taught to cast fishing line at the pond, and learned to shoot a bow at the archery station. There was also a spot for fossil searching! Kids had the chance to explore big chunks of rocks with picks and hammers to see what evidence of past life they could find within. Then, at 1 o’clock, musician Van Wagner took the stage in the main pavilion as the keynote speaker to entertain, as well as share some environmental education.

Earth Day at Mill Cove was meaningful and exciting. A great turn out caused a bustling atmosphere, and there was truly something to amuse and inspire the whole family! A wonderful event, for a wonderful cause!
Happy Earth Day!
