Dunham’s Corner – Vault of Memories

by Andrew Moore - January 23, 2015

Dunham’s Department Store is one of the oldest businesses in Wellsboro, PA. They have a century-long, family tradition of providing customers with quality products, outstanding value and courteous service. It all started in March of 1905 when Roy and Fannie Dunham bought a half-interest in a small grocery store on Wellsboro’s Main Street.

Today on Dunham’s Corner – Vice President of Merchandising, Ann Dunham Rawson, reveals a few items from the Dunham’s Vault of Treasured Memories. She advises against breaking into the vault, as it is protected by three Dobermans, an alligator and an attack cat. Dunham’s will not be held responsible for any injuries incurred from the attack cat.

The first item on display in today’s feature is a needle sorter – a steel container with a clever mechanism that’s made for an easy needle selection process.

Advertising brochures and packaging from the famous Dunham’s Old Fashioned Country Breakfast is also on display in today’s feature. “This was something my grandfather developed to help promote the agriculture of our area,” says Ann. This breakfast package was shipped up and down the east coast, including notable venues like the Algonquin Hotel and Waldorf Astoria in New York.

A National Cash Register from 1920 is also on display at the store. This solid brass machine was delivered to the store sometime in July of 1920 and still functions to this day.

Finally, the large red mechanism that sits in Cafe 1905 is explained – it is NOT a fire hose reel, contrary to popular belief. Watch the video above to discover the purpose of this Cafe 1905 icon.
