Dunham’s Corner – 110th Anniversary!

by John Vogt - September 29, 2015

Today’s broadcast-feature celebrates the 110th Anniversary of Dunham’s Department Store. It’s the latest edition of Dunham’s Corner with your host, Ann Dunham Rawson.

Ann takes us through a fascinating local history lesson. We get to enjoy and appreciate some very old photos that help tell the Dunhams’ story. The first photo shows the Dunham’s location on Main Street between 1905 and 1913. Ann also shares a shot of the original R.J. Dunham grocery store. (The photo was taken about 1909.) We see Ann’s Great Grandmother, Great Grandfather and others in the photo. The building was destroyed by a fire in 1913.

The famous Dunham’s Rolling Store is also featured in this historical tour. There were a number of these vehicles serving the community. People in our region looked forward to having a Rolling Store visit their neighborhood – especially the children, who especially enjoyed the candy and other goodies that came with it!

Next, we get a chance to see Ann’s favorite picture: an iconic representation of the Dunham’s department store.

Finally, the first half of the broadcast finishes with a look at what the Dunham’s card shop looked like in 1913. Check out the signature tin ceiling!

After the break, we have the privilege of visiting with Ann’s father, John Dunham. It’s a very enlightening time as Mr. Dunham rolls back the years and gives us a special peek at, “back in the day.”

John is so much fun to watch during this visit. He is not only a very wise businessman, but his sense of humor is delightful. The town of Wellsboro owes a lot to John and Nancy Dunham and the entire Dunham family. Keeping a family business operating with quality and integrity for 110 years is no easy task. We send a special thank you to all of the Dunham family for serving us so well. There truly is “something about Dunham’s.”
