Down Winding Roads

by Chloe Quimby - November 12, 2015

“Each generation has to step up…and appreciate what we have.” So says Nancy McCaughey, artist and contributor to the Gmeiner exhibit titled “Down Winding Roads,” which will be available for the public’s enjoyment November 1st – 29th. The three year project has indeed taken these local photographers down many roads in Tioga to, as Mia Anderson says, “photographically document this incredible county…travel[ing] the back roads through every season, at dawn and dusk, and occasionally under the stars.”

The exhibit, which captures the region’s wilds within each frame, is set up in Gmeiner to mimic the town’s arrangement, with photographs of the Green at its center. Points of compass decorate the corners of the gallery. Sam McCaughey, Nancy’s husband, explains, “We discovered that…Wellsboro is oriented 45° to the rest of the world. So the corners of the buildings here are north, east, south, and west. We orient the show the same sort of way.”

Additionally, Down Winding Roads is hosting a contest in conjunction with their exhibit. Attendees are encouraged to correctly name local roads from certain photos in order to be entered for a drawing. One winner will receive a 16×20 print from the exhibit.

In closing, Anderson voices her hope that “this exhibit will inspire you to travel your own ‘Winding Roads’ and discover—or rediscover—this beautiful county.” If nothing else, WHP hopes it prompts you to take a ride down to Gmeiner to appreciate the artistic abilities of our local contributors. The display is dedicated to “all those who have and do conserve and preserve this resource for all of us to enjoy,” asserts Nancy McCaughey.
