C&N Reaches over 1,000 Children with “Teach Children to Save”

Helping teach kids smart savings habits

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 9, 2017

WELLSBORO, PA – Citizens & Northern Bank team members throughout our footprint in New York and Pennsylvania participated in the annual “Teach Children to Save” initiative sponsored by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation. Classroom presentations and bank visits were held throughout April and May, with over 1,000 students in 22 local schools and organizations participating. Since 2008, Citizens & Northern has worked with more than 10,000 local children through this program to enhance their financial education. “Teach Children to Save” uses games and real-life situations to help children understand basic money management tools, such as saving, prioritizing, budgeting and more.

Sammy Saver visited the Emporium office to help teach kids smart savings habits. Brynn Allison gave Sammy a high-five before leaving.

It’s never too early to start learning life-long savings habits. Here are some tips to help raise money-smart kids:
Talk to your child about your family budget and discuss wants versus needs, the value of saving, budgeting and the consequences of not doing so.
Introduce the concept of investments by purchasing a savings bond.
Open a “Ju$t 4 Kid$ Sammy Saver” savings account with your child and bring them with you to make deposits. This will give them hands on money management experience. Plus, your child will get a card for their birthday from Sammy and friends and they can receive a monthly statement in the mail that you can review with them.
As kids get older, have them set some financial goals if they want to purchase a big-ticket item such as video equipment or designer clothes, and you can use this experience to focus on the act of saving.

Financial literacy is the cornerstone of strong and prosperous communities. Citizens & Northern takes pride in being a leader in educating our community members about managing their personal finances and appreciates the opportunity our local schools and organizations provide to share this education with their students.

Citizens & Northern Bank is a local, independent community bank providing complete financial, investment and insurance services through 26 full service offices located throughout Cameron, Potter, McKean, Tioga, Bradford, Sullivan and Lycoming counties in Pennsylvania and Steuben County, NY. C&N’s most recently opened Elmira, NY loan production office offers commercial, residential and consumer lending services. C&N can be found on the worldwide web at www.cnbankpa.com.
