Brave Volunteers of Liberty

by Kaitlyn Wetzel - May 5, 2017

The Liberty Volunteer Fire Company is made up entirely of brave volunteers. They respond to emergencies such as structure fires, car fires, wild fires, medical calls, and rescues within the Liberty Borough, Liberty Township, and Jackson Township. Additionally, they assist with calls in Blossburg, Morris, Canton, and Trout Run. The station averages about three calls per week.

When asked about his volunteer service, First Assistant Chief Harry Colegrove responded, “Well, I can’t imagine ever not volunteering. Everybody has their thing—the thing that makes them get out of bed in the morning, the thing that brings them happiness and joy, and to me, it’s helping other people.” Harry Colegrove became involved with his local fire department at the age of fourteen and has continued to serve in his community ever since.

Are you interested in volunteering at the fire department? You can start at age fourteen by joining as a junior firefighter. Training is available in the following areas: firefighter one level classes, hazardous materials awareness classes, vehicle rescue classes, and first responder or EMT training. It’s not hard to get involved in your local fire department and there is something for everyone to do! If you would like to volunteer, consider attending a training session. The Liberty Volunteer Fire Company holds training sessions on Tuesday evenings.

We are so grateful for our volunteer firefighters and their continuous acts of bravery, and we pray for their safety. Remember to thank your local firefighters and EMTs!
