Today, Bethany discusses her favorite gem and this month’s birthstone sapphire.

Although best-known for their blue color, sapphires can occur in an array of other hues, from colorless thru all the spectral colors. However, when the mineral, corundum, is red it is classified as ruby. When a sapphire displays any other color than blue, it is considered a “fancy sapphire.” Some stones even display the phenomenon of color change! Sapphires are one of the few gems mined here in the US, but most of the world’s supply come from other locations such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Kashmir.

Royal blue is not only the most desired color of this mineral, but it’s also appropriately titled. The world’s most famous engagement ring, which belonged to Princess Diana and now the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, is adorned with a 12 carat Ceylon sapphire. It’s encircled with 14 diamonds, set in 18k white gold. At the time it was purchased, it was neither custom-made or unique, and was available to purchase by anyone. This ring came into fame as it was chosen by Diana and purchased by Prince Charles for roughly $47,000.00, but today the ring is worth more than half of a million dollars! Princess Diana chose this ring, not because it was the largest or most expensive, but because it was “simply beautiful.”
