Basketball Season Preview 2015

by Ed Weaver - December 2, 2015

The winter sports season starts this weekend, and today we take a glimpse at the Wellsboro basketball teams.

Wellsboro Girls Basketball

Head Coach: John Davis (3rd year, 20-24)
2014 Season Record: 10-12
Key Returners: Sarah Ingerick, Alexa Singer, Jada Jackson, Rachael Tuttle
Player to Watch: Sarah Ingerick

The girls only lose two seniors from last year’s team, but only bring back three seniors. The plus side is Wellsboro is loaded with a good group of underclassmen that had a solid 2014 JV year. Ingerick is 220 points shy of reaching 1,000 career points and her leadership will be key to the Lady Hornets making their first District IV playoff trip under Davis. Tuttle contributed right away as a freshman last season, making an immediate impact as the team’s fifth leading scorer. Her 143 rebounds was second on the team last year, and the Lady Hornets will need that presence in the paint this season.

The girls stand a very good shot at making playoffs if they can limit turnovers and close out close games down the stretch. The team opens their season on Friday, December 4 at the Muncy Rotary Tournament against Hughesville.

Wellsboro Boys Basketball

Head Coach: Todd Outman (6th year, 103-22)
2014 Season Record: 19-7, District IV AA runners-up, PIAA playoff qualifier
Key Returners: Dawson Prough, Quinn Henry, Brandon Lamphier
Player to Watch: Quinn Henry

The boys lose 1,000-point scorer Michael Pietropola and defensive standout Kieron Smethers from last year’s team, but bring back a lot of underclassmen who saw a lot of minutes last year because of low numbers. Prough, Henry, and Lamphier must take over the scoring vacated by Pietropola for the Hornets to have a successful year.

The boys will have an great shot of winning the NTL Division 1 title and making another District championship run. The team opens their season on Saturday, December 5 as they hit the road to take on St. John Neumann.
