Have you recently been inconvenienced, frustrated, hurt, or offended? How did you respond? If you’re like most, your initial reaction was not kind. You may have been tempted to snap back, defend yourself, get revenge, or even the score. In most cases we are quick to look to our own interests, but fail to consider the interests of others. This self-focused living is the source of all quarrels, bitterness, and all kinds of heartache.

What if there was another way?

Good news — there is! God created us to live with a focus that looks beyond ourselves to the intersetes of others. Philippians 2:3-4 says it this way:
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Think of how much more enjoyable life would be if those around you lived with your interests in mind. You can’t control how others live, but you can do your part! Take a step back and consider what you might do to look to the interests of others today. Be the one to forgive. Show grace to those who don’t deserve it. Be kind even if the kindness is not returned.

The greatest example of unselfish living is Jesus. He came to earth, humbly took the cross, and paid the penalty for our sins. If you have trusted Christ for your salvation, consider what it meant for Jesus to look to your interests. Allow that to motivate you to live a life focused on the interests of others.
