Athens outlasts North Penn-Mansfield

by Ed Weaver - December 18, 2017

A game-high 20 points by Athens’ Emily Lunger was the difference as the Lady wildcats handed North Penn-Mansfield a 42-29 loss on Friday, December 15.

The Lady Wildcats struggled early on in the first quarter and Mansfield took advantage of that, outscoring them 10-6.

Later in the second, however, is when Athens did the most damage. Two three-pointers by Kayleigh Miller, and 6 points from Kara Chapman, sparked an 18-point quarter. Athens’ defense kept the Lady Tigers’ offense in check and limited them to just 6 points to lead 24-16 at halftime.

The roles were reversed once the third quarter got underway as this time it was the Lady Tigers’ defense that caused problems. North Penn-Mansfield limited Athens’ scoring, holding them to just 4 points, while putting up 8 points of their own, including a three-pointer from Lizzi Welch. As the quarter came to a close the Lady Tigers got back within striking distance as they trailed 28-24.

The fourth was when Lunger took over. The senior scored 11 of her points in the quarter, while the Wildcat defense held Mansfield to just 5 points to pick up the Northern Tier League win.

Chapman finished with 14 points for Athens.

The Lady Tigers were led by JoAnne McNamara with 8 points and 6 points each from Jaime Palmer and Lizzi Welch.

The loss drops the Tigers to 1-3 overall before the team’s upcoming game against Wyalusing on Wednesday, December 20.
