Airport Expansion Discussion Part 2

by John Vogt - December 19, 2014

Last Friday, December 12, 2014 – Wellsboro Home Page ran Part 1 of the Wellsboro Airport Expansion Project. The broadcast was requested by Craig Musser, the Wellsboro Johnston Airport Manager. He asked for the broadcast to address any concerns that the community may have regarding the environmental impact of the expansion project. The Pine Creek Head Waters Protection Group joined us for that program to express their concerns. Because of the time constraints and in order to make room for discussion on the concerns, Craig Musser did not really have enough time to cover all of the benefits of the project during that broadcast. Today we have asked Craig to join us again to explore those benefits and answer some of the concerns mentioned last week.

The primary benefit for this runway expansion is safety, but there are other benefits as well. As part of the project, Clean Earth will provide over 500,000 tons of engineered fill for this project. This will save the Wellsboro Johnston Airport between 6 and 10 million dollars. Clean Earth will also provide a sub-base over top of the fill area. The only thing that the Wellsboro Johnston Airport will have to come up with funding for is the asphalt for the runway itself and the extended lighting system. The airport will also acquire a 30,000 square-foot building when Clean Earth has completed their operations. This building will eventually become a hanger for the airport, saving the Wellsboro Johnston Airpot millions of dollars in construction cost. In addition, the airport will receive monetary funding either in an annual lump sum or in monthly installments. Details are being discussed as to how the airport would receive the additional funding.

Craig went on to talk about the safety of the project and answer some of the accusations against Clean Earth brought forth last week from the Pine Creek Head Waters Protection Group. Please watch today’s broadcast for details. Craig also discussed his desire for a public hearing on the project to adequately address the issues and concerns.

Again, Wellsboro Home Page is also encouraging a public hearing and continued debate on this project so that all the details and facts can be understood from both vantage points. We would like to see the project succeed, but only if it is environmentally safe for Pine Creek and our community. We encourage both sides to meet and continue discussions to address the concerns. We believe that there is a way to work things out that will mutually benefit our community with extended runway capabilities while addressing the environmental concerns of the Pine Creek Head Waters Protection Group and others who want to ensure the environmental safety of Pine Creek.

We are sure that there is more to come on this in the near future so stay connected here on Wellsboro Home Page. Thanks for watching.
