15-Year-Old Trains Emergency Comm crews!

by John Vogt - March 20, 2014

Dennis Colegrove, Tioga County’s Emergency Management Coordinator, held a training session at the NYPUM Building this past Tuesday night. He explained to Wellsboro Home Page correspondent, Johanna Vogt, that the Auxiliary Communication Service is the new terminology for all the different agencies who can assist with communications in disasters and other large scale incidents. In Pennsylvania, we have a seven-county regional task force that deals with all the homeland security funding to enhance our response. Because of that grant, funding kits have been developed to assist the amateur radio groups throughout the seven counties in order to do their job of helping us in emergency management.

“Kelsey Seymour has been involved in the entire equipment process. He provided advice and guidance on what to purchase, designed the portable kits, and organized the labor to assemble the eight kits. He has also developed the training program and delivered it once in Lycoming County. [Tuesday night] was the second training and will complete the formal Boy Scout project in pursuit of his Eagle rank. I believe this is one of the most ambitious Eagle Scout projects ever undertaken and Kelsey has done an exceptional job with it,” Colegrove stated.

If you would like to become involved in these projects you can contact Dennis Colegrove at Tioga County Emergency Services at 570-724-9110. To learn more about how you can become an amateur radio operator, you can visit ARRL.org.
